Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra

A tradition of excellence for more than 60 years. In the fall of 1940, Mr. Herman H. Rinne decided it was time to have an orchestra for people who loved to play but had other occupations.  Mr. Rinne was a musician and businessman -- he owned the Indiana Music Company at 115 East Ohio Street.  He helped establish and played in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for 8 years under the direction of Ferdinand Schaefer.  Thirteen players showed up for the first meeting and the orchestra quickly grew to 50 members.  Mr. Rinne suggested the name "Indianapolis Philharmonic Orchestra" - He said, "we may not be good but at least the name sounds imposing."

New Horizons

The New Horizons Band of Indiana was formed in 1994 by Sam Rhinesmith, then recently retired as the long-time and legendary Director of Bands at North Central High School, sponsored and generously supported by Warner Paige of Paige’s Music.  When formed, the Indiana band was only the third band in existence, but since then the movement has grown and flourished – New Horizons Music is now an international organization with over 200 bands, orchestras, and choirs and more than 10,000 members worldwide.  These groups were all formed to give adult seniors the chance to learn to play a musical instrument, and much more often as a re-entry point for people who have been away from active music making for many years.
